PRIVATE IZMIR SHORE EXCURSION

Private Full-Day Ephesus Tour from Izmir Port

A full Ephesus day for ships calling at Izmir: a longer road south through the Aegean hinterland, then the hilltop house, the excavated city, the Basilica of St John and the Artemision, all planned backwards from your all-aboard time.

  • Start & finishIzmir Cruise Port
  • DurationAbout 6–8 hours

Izmir is further away — so the planning matters more

Ephesus lies near Selcuk, well south of Izmir, so an Izmir call spends real time on the road in both directions. That is not a drawback if it is planned honestly: the transfer is built into the timetable from the start, and the number of stops is set by what the remaining hours can carry.

This format is the fuller Izmir day. It keeps the four landmarks that most travellers come for and accepts that the drive is part of the experience rather than pretending it away.

TOUR CHARACTER

What makes this tour different

  • Private, your party only, maximum 14
  • Starts and ends at Izmir Cruise Port
  • Long transfer planned into the timetable
  • Back-to-Ship Guarantee

Your private Izmir full-day sequence

  1. Meet at Izmir Cruise Port

Your guide meets your party at the Izmir pier; ship and all-aboard time recorded before departure.

  2. Road transfer south

The longer drive toward Selcuk, used to introduce the Aegean landscape and the region's history.

  3. House of the Virgin Mary

The hilltop shrine on Bulbuldag, presented as tradition and living devotion.

  4. Ephesus

Harbour Street, the Great Theatre, Marble Street, the Library of Celsus and Curetes Street.

  5. Basilica of St John

The Justinianic church on Ayasuluk hill above Selcuk.

  6. Temple of Artemis

The sanctuary field with its single re-erected column.

  7. Return to Izmir Cruise Port

The northbound drive, with the return buffer required by the Back-to-Ship Guarantee.

Because the road time is substantial, the last stops are the flexible ones. Your guide will tell you early in the day if the schedule is tightening rather than at the end.

Why the city is not where the port is

Modern Izmir occupies the site of ancient Smyrna, a rival Aegean port that outlived Ephesus precisely because its harbour did not silt. Driving between the two is a lesson in why coastal geography decided which cities survived into the modern world and which became archaeological parks.

That comparison is the through-line of this day. It keeps the transfer from feeling like dead time and it explains what you are looking at when you finally stand on Harbour Street with no harbour in sight.

  • The upper storeys of the Library of Celsus at Ephesus against a clear blue sky.

    The reason for the drive

The Library of Celsus is the image most travellers carry away from Ephesus, and it is worth the road time from Izmir when the call allows it.

  • The Isa Bey Mosque in Selcuk seen from above, with the surrounding plain behind it.

    Ayasuluk hill and Selcuk

The Basilica of St John and the Isa Bey Mosque sit above the modern town, a short distance from the Artemision field.

A long transfer needs a bigger buffer

From Izmir the return leg is the largest single risk to your all-aboard time, so it is planned first and generously. If road conditions change during the day, we shorten or drop a stop rather than the buffer, and we tell you when we do. The Back-to-Ship Guarantee applies to the confirmed cruise itinerary and the arrangement made with us.

No. Entrance tickets are an opt-in extra that is excluded by default; when you select them, the confirmed amount is returned by our reservation system with your quote.

Ephesus entrance fees and opening hours

Only when the day's timing allows it. Your guide will judge that against the confirmed return buffer rather than promising it in advance.

Ephesus has uneven ancient paving, slopes, steps and very little shade. Tell us about mobility needs before booking so the plan is realistic rather than optimistic.
