Where Is Ephesus?

Ephesus is in western Türkiye, in İzmir Province beside the modern town of Selcuk. The ancient city is inland from today’s Aegean shoreline, yet its theatre and main harbour road still face west toward the vanished port.
A city that followed the coast
The apparent contradiction is geological. Ephesus developed around the estuary of the Kaystros River. Sediment gradually pushed the shoreline westward, and settlement and harbour facilities shifted in response. UNESCO therefore treats Ephesus not as a single ruin field but as a landscape of successive settlements.
Look west from the theatre or along Harbour Street. The broad plain is not empty background; it is part of the archaeological explanation. The city’s access to maritime trade helped make it prosperous, while the changing harbour repeatedly forced it to adapt.
Ephesus, Selcuk and Kusadasi
Selcuk is the neighbouring town and the location of the Ephesus Museum, Ayasuluk Hill and the Basilica of St John. Kusadasi is the coastal port from which many cruise visitors begin. İzmir is the provincial centre farther north. These names describe different places, even when tourism pages use them loosely.
Understanding that geography makes the site easier to read. A guide can point out how the ancient road system, harbour basin and later movement toward Ayasuluk fit the landscape visible today.
