Ephesus is one of the few places where a New Testament narrative can be set against standing remains. Acts describes a silversmiths' protest that filled the theatre; the theatre is still there, and so is the economic logic behind the protest — a city whose prosperity was tied to a famous goddess.
This format works whether you come as a pilgrim or as a reader. What it will not do is convert tradition into documentation: where the sources are later, we say when they were written and what they claim.

What the sources say, and when they were written
Paul's association with Ephesus is attested in first-century letters and in Acts. The traditions about John living, writing and being buried here appear in later sources, and the tradition that Mary spent her last years nearby is later still, becoming prominent in the modern period. Those distinctions matter to honest guiding.
None of this reduces the place. A tradition that produced a sixth-century imperial basilica is a historical force in its own right, whatever its origin. We describe both the belief and its documentary footing, and we do not put words into any apostle's mouth.
The theatre of Acts 19
The narrative in Acts places a crowd here, protesting that the trade in Artemis shrines was threatened. The building's capacity makes the scene physically intelligible.
