- Respect at devotional places
- Several stops are active places of prayer. Modest dress and quiet are expected, and photography may be restricted inside.
- Uneven ground away from the main site
- The slopes around the Seven Sleepers area and Ayasuluk hill are rougher than the paved city streets.
- Access can change
- Secondary sites are opened and closed at short notice by their authorities. Nothing outside the main site is promised in advance.
Three kinds of statement, kept apart
A documented fact is something like the existence of a Justinianic basilica on Ayasuluk hill: it has masonry, imperial context and a building history. An interpretation is a scholar's argument about why Ephesus retained religious importance after its harbour failed. A tradition is the story of sleepers who woke after generations, told in Christian and Islamic sources alike.
All three are worth your attention, and the day is richer when they are not blurred together. Your guide will tell you which kind of statement each one is, and will not invent a date, an inscription or an etymology to make a story tidier.
Water, gods and civic pride
Fountains in Ephesus were dedicated as much as they were built. Inscriptions record who paid, which deity was honoured, and what the donor expected in return.
Layer upon layer at Selcuk
