What is officially confirmed
The Turkish Museums page names an Upper Gate and a Lower Gate and describes them as roughly three kilometres apart. The 2026 İzmir visitor-information page also lists the two gates separately. These are current operational labels used by the site authority.
The same sources identify the Terrace Houses as a separately controlled entry. A ticket gate, a monument entrance and the entrance to the wider World Heritage landscape are therefore not interchangeable.
Operational labels, not Roman names
“Upper” and “Lower” describe how the modern visitor operation addresses the site’s topography. They are not ancient gate names and should not be used to rewrite the Roman street system.
The distinction still matters. It determines where transport meets the visitor and which part of the city appears first. Confirm the same gate name with the driver, guide and ticket office rather than relying on an informal meeting description.
Direction is an interpretive choice — until the site says otherwise
An upper-side start can introduce the State Agora, Prytaneion and Odeon before Curetes Street leads toward the library, market and theatre. A lower-side start reverses that sequence and begins with the theatre’s relationship to Harbour Street and the vanished port.
That is an interpretive choice, not evidence of a permanent one-way rule. The current official sources reviewed for this page do not establish a universal direction for every visitor.
Programme rules can change the gate
Special programmes demonstrate why gate advice must be dated. The official 2026 visitor notice assigns particular operations to the Lower Gate during night-museum sessions. Events, conservation or crowd management can produce a different arrangement on another date.
Check the Turkish Museums page close to the visit and follow staff instructions on arrival. A well-planned guided visit begins by confirming the real gate, then builds the historical sequence from the direction actually available.
