What this journey is
This is an archaeology and culture journey rather than a pilgrimage. It runs south from Istanbul along the Aegean edge of Anatolia, stopping at four places where excavation has changed what we know: Troy, where stratigraphy was more or less invented; Pergamon, one of the great Hellenistic capitals; Ephesus, among the most completely excavated cities in the Mediterranean; and Hierapolis above the travertines of Pamukkale.
Everything runs privately, for your booking party alone and never more than fourteen guests, in your own vehicle with a licensed guide. Four days is a working length for this route: two of the sites are very large and are given most of a day each, while the Dardanelles crossing and the inland run to Pamukkale are planned as driving days with a single major site attached rather than padded with filler stops.
Evidence, interpretation and tradition
Documented archaeology: Troy, Pergamon, Ephesus and Hierapolis are all long-running excavation projects with published reports and current permits. What stands on the ground is dated material, with the modern consolidation and anastylosis pointed out as such.
Scholarly interpretation: the phasing of Troy, the reconstruction of Pergamon's altar terrace and the shifting coastline that closed the harbour of Ephesus are all arguments built from evidence, and specialists still disagree about the details. Your guide presents them as arguments, not conclusions.
Tradition: the Homeric story of Troy and the local legends attached to the Pamukkale springs belong to literature and folklore rather than to the excavation record, and they are told as that.
Day by day
Day 1 · Istanbul to Troy
We collect you from an agreed Istanbul hotel and drive south-west to the Dardanelles. Troy is read on the ground as what excavation has actually shown it to be: a settlement mound occupied and rebuilt across several thousand years, with the successive city levels cut through by more than a century of trenches.
Your guide separates that stratigraphy from the Homeric tradition. The Iliad is literature of a later age, and the question of which level, if any, corresponds to a remembered conflict remains an open argument among excavators rather than a settled identification.

Day 2 · Pergamon: acropolis and Asclepieion
The second day is given to Pergamon. On the acropolis above the modern town the terraces carry the theatre cut into the hillside, the library and temple precincts and the altar terrace, and the whole scheme is read as one piece of Hellenistic city planning rather than a set of separate monuments.
Below on the plain lies the Asclepieion, the sanctuary and healing complex reached by its colonnaded way. From there the route continues south along the coast road to Kusadasi, where the next two nights are based.

Day 3 · Ephesus and Selcuk
A full day in the Ephesus region. The walk through the excavated city follows the official route direction of the day and takes in Curetes Street, the facade of the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre and the harbour approach, read as one working Roman port city.
The covered Terrace Houses are entered only when you have selected them and the excavation shelter is open on the day. The afternoon adds the site of the Temple of Artemis, where a single re-erected column stands for a sanctuary known mainly from excavation reports and ancient description, and the Ephesus Museum in Selcuk, where the finds from the city are displayed.
Site access, the covered Terrace Houses and museum opening are confirmed in writing against the current official hours before your journey is reserved.
Overnight in Kusadasi · Breakfast and dinner
Day 4 · Pamukkale, Hierapolis and on to Izmir
The last day crosses inland to Pamukkale, where calcium-rich springs have built the white travertine terraces on the hillside, and to Hierapolis above them: a Roman and later Byzantine city with its theatre, colonnaded street and one of the largest necropoleis in Anatolia.
The journey then travels by road to Izmir and finishes at your Izmir hotel or at Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport, at a time agreed in your written proposal.

- Ground and walking
- Expect substantial walking on uneven ancient ground at all four sites, including the hillside terraces at Pergamon and the slope down through Ephesus. Firm closed shoes are essential.
- Driving days
- Day 1 and day 4 are long road days by design. The vehicle is yours alone, comfort stops are made whenever you want them, and the day order can be adjusted for traffic or weather.
- Hotels
- Hotels are minimum four-star. The properties shown above are indicative examples, not guaranteed bookings. Your exact hotel and room type — or an equivalent or higher-standard alternative — are named for approval in your written proposal before confirmation.
- Site access
- Every site keeps its own official seasonal hours, published by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Nothing that depends on an open shelter, an open museum or a current access permit is promised here; it is confirmed in writing in your proposal.
- Pace and flexibility
- The order of stops within a day may change for traffic, weather or an official closure. The route as a whole is not shortened without your agreement.

It starts at an agreed Istanbul hotel on the morning of day 1 and finishes on day 4 in Izmir, either at your Izmir hotel or at Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport. The exact times are agreed in your written proposal.
You will see the excavated settlement mound, with its successive building levels exposed in the trenches. Whether any of those levels is the city of the poem is an open question in scholarship, and your guide will say so rather than pick a side for you.
No. Entrance tickets and museum admissions are optional and excluded by default. If you would like them added, our reservations team prices them for your party and confirms the total in writing before you commit.
Only when you select them and the covered excavation is open on the day. The shelter has its own ticket and its own opening arrangements, so it is offered as an option and confirmed in writing rather than promised in advance.
No. This journey travels entirely by road and no flight of any kind is included. Your arrival into Istanbul and your onward travel from Izmir are yours to book.
No. The only cultural stop of that kind we offer anywhere is a carpet-weaving heritage visit, and it is on request only. It is never preselected, never used to fill time, and no other shopping stop exists on this route.
